Reimagining home cleaning

The Clever Nut brand of sustainable and plant-based home cleaning products is the first venture of the Hands Together – Hearts Together Foundation. The ethos behind these products is it shouldn’t cost the earth to go back to our roots. Given the extent of damage we are already seeing to the planet and ecosystems, the idea is to encourage urban households to adopt a plant-based and sustainable way of life before it is too late. The products are completely chemical free and wholly made from plant-based ingredients such as citrus bio-enzymes, soapnut, shikakai and albizia amara. Even the used water can be reused to wash floors and water plants. The used water has the ability to unclog drains as it passes through urban drainage systems. At a macro level, bio-enzymes also have the potential to clean large water bodies such as polluted lakes and rivers. The products have been tested for cleaning efficiency and natural shelf life. They have no artificial shelf-life enhancers and anti-caking or anti-settling agents. They are free of strong smells and are kept mildly fragrant with a dash of essential oil.

Many commercial cleaning products are loaded with chemical surfactants, residues of which if not washed well can cause serious damage. While using such products, we might also end up inadvertently inhaling the toxicity which has the potential to cause breathing issues. It is recommended to check commercial product labels for existence of phosphates, sulphate, triclosan, formaldehyde and such others. Often the amount of chemicals in these cleaners are not necessary to achieve cleaning, which can be accomplished through simpler substances that are sustainable, regenerative – basically plant produce that grow right off trees. In fact, it might be interesting to note that soap was not used for cleaning in India until about 150 years ago. Even until the 1920s, plant based natural surfactants – reetha (soapnut) was more often than not the single solution for washing everything from homes to hair. Once the British introduced soap in the country, ancient wisdom was soon forgotten and we unfortunately became fully dependant on toxic and abrasive agents for cleaning ourselves and our homes. One of our aims is to revive that lost wisdom and make is accessible. To prove that our children and pets and skin can do without the harshness of artificial cleaning agents. And that froth isn’t always good and needed.
